The Breath of Ma-ai

NITTODO (Yasaka, Kyoto)

RAYCREA weaves a lingering resonance of light while harmoniously interacting with various materials such as glass, Japanese traditional paper “washi”, iron, wood, and mirrors that inhabit the space of NITTODO. The light attenuation created by RAYCREA, with its varying thicknesses, heights, and widths, gently reveals the textures of surrounding materials and the depth of the space. This nuanced illumination reflects the passage of time and the fluctuations of emotions. The light, which changes expression depending on the viewing angle, speaks to the senses of those who visit, breathing quietly as if inviting a dialogue with the space.

What NITTŌDŌ embodies is not merely the light that enters a space, but the breath of natural light filtering into a traditional machiya— a quiet yet vivid presence, a trace of life felt within stillness.
It is an invisible exhale shaped by the layered memories of the town and its people.
To place RAYCREA in this space
is to reconstruct the resonance and spacing of light.
We sense it as a quiet medium that renders the dynamic flow of light visible.
Light, acrylic, glass, wood, iron, and paper— Through RAYCREA, these diverse materials intersect with light, weaving together a multi-layered visual language.
This installation captures the shifting expressions of light over time, visualizing the vibrations of breath and emotion embedded within.
Between materials and space,
and in the subtle intervals between the senses and emotions of those who gather here, an invisible rhythm quietly emerges.
The Breath of Ma-ai is the exhalation that reflects that fleeting moment when the rhythm becomes perceptible.
